Most guides to photographing illumination were written for the northern hemisphere, where the festive season falls in the depths of winter and darkness arrives by four in the afternoon. South Africa inverts all of it. Our festive lights go up in November and burn through a high-summer December, which means waiting out a long warm evening before there is enough darkness to shoot in — sunset lands somewhere between seven and eight depending on where in the country you are, and you want another forty-five minutes on top of that before the lights read properly against the sky. The air is warm, the evenings are long, and the shooting window is narrower than you would expect. This guide covers where festive lights photograph well, the settings that get you there, and the creative techniques worth trying once the basics are working.

Where festive lights photograph well: four scenes

Illumination rewards matching your approach to the setting. Four situations cover most of what you will encounter,

A long weekend in the Winelands, a road trip up the West Coast, a few days on the KwaZulu-Natal coast: the places we travel to within South Africa are as worth photographing properly as anywhere further afield. The trouble is that holiday pictures often come back flatter than the trip felt. The light was better than that, the view was wider, the food looked more appetising than the photograph suggests.

This guide sets out practical travel photo tips in three parts: the scenes you are most likely to shoot, the exposure and composition behind them, and how to choose a lens you will actually enjoy carrying for a week. Most of it applies whether you are travelling with company or heading off on your own.

Why an Interchangeable-Lens Camera Lifts Your Travel Photography

Most travel pictures are taken on a phone, and for a quick record of where you were that is perfectly sensible. If you want more from the images than a record, an interchangeable-lens camera changes what is available to you.

South Africa's fireworks season falls in December and January, when displays go up over harbours, stadiums and waterfronts on warm nights that stay light until well after seven. Photographing them looks harder than it is. The subject is bright, its shape is predictable even when its timing is not, and it sits against a black sky that does most of the compositional work for you. Get the exposure settings and the lens right and the rest is patience. This guide covers both.

What you need for fireworks photography

Fireworks photography asks for a wide field of view, a long exposure and a camera that does not move. That combination sets the kit list. Here is what to have with you before the first shell goes up.

Capture the whole display with a wide-angle lens

A wide-angle lens — roughly 35mm or shorter — is what lets you fit an entire display into the frame without clipping the tops off the highest bursts. It also gives you room to include what sits underneath: a harbour wall, a crowd, a city

A practical guide to photographing stars, the Milky Way and night landscapes under South African skies

South Africa offers exceptional opportunities for astrophotography, from the dry, open skies of the Karoo to the dramatic ridgelines of the Drakensberg and the rugged formations of the Cederberg. Although photographing the night sky can seem technically demanding, strong results are possible once you understand the basic equipment, exposure settings and focusing techniques involved.

This guide explains how to plan an astrophotography shoot with an interchangeable-lens camera, choose a suitable lens and build compositions that feel distinctly South African. Use the recommended settings as a starting point, then adjust them to suit the moon phase, weather, level of light pollution and the scene in front of you.

Successful astrophotography begins before the shutter is pressed. A stable support system, a suitable lens and a few practical

South Africa is one of the world's most extraordinary destinations for night sky photography. From the vast, pitch-black plains of the Karoo to the jagged silhouettes of the Drakensberg, the country offers some of the clearest, most dramatic skies on the planet. As part of the Southern Hemisphere, South Africa enjoys a unique vantage point of the night sky — one that includes the iconic Southern Cross, the brilliant arc of the Milky Way, and a density of stars rarely seen from the northern half of the globe.

Whether you are a complete beginner picking up a camera for the first time or an enthusiast looking to sharpen your technique, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know. We cover the key subjects you can photograph in the South African night sky, essential camera settings, compositional techniques, gear advice, and how to choose the right lens for night sky photography that suits your goals and budget.

South Africa is one of the finest destinations in the world for moon photography. From the vast, ink-dark skies above the Karoo to the dramatic silhouette of Table Mountain framed against a rising full moon, the country offers photographers a spectacular natural canvas that few places on earth can match. Whether you are a seasoned outdoor photographer or someone who has just picked up an interchangeable lens camera for the first time, learning how to take beautiful photos of the moon is one of the most rewarding challenges you can take on.

Yet moon photography has a way of humbling even enthusiastic beginners. You step outside on a clear Highveld night, point your camera at that brilliant full moon hanging above the Magaliesberg, press the shutter — and the result is a small, washed-out white blob against a featureless black sky. The good news is that with the right lens, a basic understanding of camera settings, and a little preparation, capturing stunning moon images is well within reach

Night photography offers a completely different perspective compared to daytime shooting. As the sun sets, cities come alive with glowing lights, and natural landscapes transform into dramatic, moody scenes. Whether you're photographing the vibrant V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, the skyline of Johannesburg, or the quiet beauty of the Karoo under the stars, night photography opens up endless creative opportunities.

However, shooting at night can be challenging. Low light, strong contrasts, and mixed lighting sources require a solid understanding of camera settings and the right equipment. In this guide, we’ll share practical night photography tips to help you capture sharp, well-exposed, and visually striking images across South Africa.
