If your kit is built around prime lenses, or you have gone all-in on a wide-angle for landscapes and a telephoto for wildlife, it is fair to ask whether a standard zoom lens still deserves space in your bag. Plenty of photographers get by without one. But the standard zoom lens has remained the most-used lens in photography for a reason, and that reason tends to announce itself the first time you are halfway up Lion's Head, or standing on a gravel road in the Karoo, with the wrong glass on the camera. This article looks at what a standard zoom lens does well, the shooting situations where it makes the most sense, and what to check before you buy one.

Standard Zoom Lens Basics: What the Range Actually Covers

Roughly 50mm is what the industry calls the standard focal length. A standard zoom lens is simply a zoom built around that point, and most cover the wide-angle end through to short telephoto, letting you move between framings without swapping glass.

The name comes down to how the range

You bought an interchangeable lens camera for stills. The video button is right there, and most of the time you still reach for your phone instead — because the first few clips you shot with the camera came out flat, or juddery, or blown out, and the phone simply handled it better.

That gap is not a hardware problem. Phone video is heavily processed to look acceptable in any condition. Mirrorless video hands you the controls and expects you to set them. Once you understand what those controls actually do, the footage pulls decisively ahead.

This guide covers three things: the terms behind every video setting and what each one controls, how to configure the camera in the right order, and how to choose a lens that holds up in the field. It is written for South African conditions, which matters more than it sounds — summer light here is intense enough that the standard exposure advice written for other markets does not work without adjustment. That point comes up repeatedly below.

Why mirrorless

A long weekend in the Winelands, a road trip up the West Coast, a few days on the KwaZulu-Natal coast: the places we travel to within South Africa are as worth photographing properly as anywhere further afield. The trouble is that holiday pictures often come back flatter than the trip felt. The light was better than that, the view was wider, the food looked more appetising than the photograph suggests.

This guide sets out practical travel photo tips in three parts: the scenes you are most likely to shoot, the exposure and composition behind them, and how to choose a lens you will actually enjoy carrying for a week. Most of it applies whether you are travelling with company or heading off on your own.

Why an Interchangeable-Lens Camera Lifts Your Travel Photography

Most travel pictures are taken on a phone, and for a quick record of where you were that is perfectly sensible. If you want more from the images than a record, an interchangeable-lens camera changes what is available to you.

The

You have been invited to a wedding, you own a camera, and you would like to come back with something better than the pictures everyone else took on their phones. That is a different job from the one the hired photographer is doing. They are working to a shot list and they have access to positions you do not; you are sitting where you were seated, you know half the people in the room, and you can photograph them in a way a stranger cannot.

Wedding photo shooting is not one skill but several, and this guide covers guest photography at weddings in four parts: the scenes that come up on the day, the wedding photo tips and settings behind them, the etiquette that keeps you out of the professional’s way, and how to choose a lens for it. It assumes a South African wedding, which often means part of the day outdoors and part of it in a barn, a marquee or a cellar, with the light changing completely between the two.

Wedding Photography Scenes and How to Shoot Them

A wedding runs to a rough script,

Video has become the default way to share a life online, and vlogging is where most people start. A phone in your pocket is enough to begin, which is exactly why the format has spread so quickly. But there is a clear step up waiting once you move to an interchangeable-lens camera — cleaner footage after dark, genuine background separation, and a look that holds together when someone watches it on a television rather than a handset. This guide works through what vlogging is, the equipment worth buying first, how to film and publish sensibly, and how to choose a lens that matches the way you actually shoot.

What is vlogging?

Vlogging explained

The word is a contraction of “video blog”, and that is more or less what it is: a blog told in moving pictures rather than paragraphs. Where a written post relies on description and a handful of photographs, vlogging captures the thing itself — a morning routine, a weekend away, a recipe, a workshop project — as it unfolds.

The reason it connects is

Bird photography is one of the few branches of wildlife photography you can start from your own garden. There is real satisfaction in watching a bird long enough to understand what it is about to do, and then catching that moment cleanly. The difficulty is that birds are alert, they keep their distance, and they move faster than almost anything else you will point a camera at.

This guide covers what you need to get going: how to choose a lens for bird photography, the exposure and focus settings that actually work in the field, the compositions worth learning first, and how to approach different subjects from large waders to small garden birds. It closes with field etiquette, which matters as much as technique.

Lenses for bird photography

Lens choice shapes bird photography more than any other decision. Focal length and angle of view are where to start.

South Africa's fireworks season falls in December and January, when displays go up over harbours, stadiums and waterfronts on warm nights that stay light until well after seven. Photographing them looks harder than it is. The subject is bright, its shape is predictable even when its timing is not, and it sits against a black sky that does most of the compositional work for you. Get the exposure settings and the lens right and the rest is patience. This guide covers both.

What you need for fireworks photography

Fireworks photography asks for a wide field of view, a long exposure and a camera that does not move. That combination sets the kit list. Here is what to have with you before the first shell goes up.

Capture the whole display with a wide-angle lens

A wide-angle lens — roughly 35mm or shorter — is what lets you fit an entire display into the frame without clipping the tops off the highest bursts. It also gives you room to include what sits underneath: a harbour wall, a crowd, a city

Most of us reach for a phone when we want to film something, and phones have come a long way. Dedicated camcorders still have their place too. But if you have ever filmed a thunderstorm building over the Highveld and found that the footage looked flatter on screen than the scene did in front of you, you have met the ceiling of a small sensor and a fixed lens. An interchangeable lens camera lifts that ceiling. This guide sets out what the format gives you as a filmmaker, the scenes it handles best, and what to look for when you choose a lens for video.

Can you really shoot video on an interchangeable lens camera?

It is easy to think of an interchangeable lens camera as a stills tool that happens to record clips, but that is no longer a fair description. Current bodies have a dedicated video mode, and switching into it gives you high-quality recording straight away. Once you start configuring the body properly and adding lenses, filters, microphones and support gear, the same camera will

Baseball and softball ask more of a camera than almost any other sport played on a South African field. The action arrives in short, explosive bursts at unpredictable moments, the players are a long way from wherever you are standing, and the light is either brutally hard or draining away faster than it feels like it is. Get the settings right and you come away with photographs that carry real weight — a bat meeting the ball, a fielder stretched full length, a junior player's face in the second before a pitch arrives. This article covers how to photograph sports on the diamond: the exposure settings that freeze movement, a scene-by-scene approach that puts you in the right position, and how to choose a lens with the reach to get there.

Most people who buy an interchangeable lens camera for their dog or cat discover the same thing within a week: the animal will not cooperate, the light is harsher than it looked, and the photographs come out slightly soft in a way that is difficult to diagnose. Almost all of it comes down to three things — where you focus, where you put the camera, and how you handle the light. This article covers how to photograph dogs and cats with an interchangeable lens camera: the six techniques that make the largest difference, how the approach shifts between the lounge, a walk and open country, and what to look for when you choose a lens.

How to photograph dogs and cats: six techniques that make the difference

There are six things worth getting right, and they build on one another. Start with focus and camera position, because those cost nothing and fix most problems, then work through exposure and lens choice.
